Superior Selection
She’s two years old, and she’s something of a bad girl. She’s a chestnut. Between them, her parents won 9 Grade or Group I races. She started life as Gossip Gal, but that was too close to Gozzip Girl, and … Continue reading
Brian’s condensed Pick 4 preview, October 17
With the scheduled Grade III Athenia getting cancelled on Thursday due to the heavy rains in the forecast, there’s a good chance that all of Saturday’s action will be washed off the turf. With that in mind, we’ll take a … Continue reading
The story of Pappy’s Double H
The story begins at Belmont, at the 2004 Belmont Stakes. Lois Engel and her husband, Paul Raymond, were there with 120,137 other racing fans, wondering whether Smarty Jones would become the first horse in 25 years to win the Triple … Continue reading
Keeneland, sights and sounds and…tastes…
I think it’s awfully nice when school holidays coincide with Keeneland racing; it’s even better when it happens in October, when part of the journey involves wending through the West Virginia and Maryland mountains as fall foliage explodes in color. … Continue reading
Mushka and Court Vision
Saturday, November 24th, 2007, was a pretty good day for trainer Bill Mott. He swept the two-year-old stakes that day at Aqueduct when Court Vision overcame an inquiry to win the Grade II Remsen; a race earlier, his Mushka had … Continue reading
Brian’s Belmont babies preview

40 days
Noah built the ark when it rained for 40 days and 40 nights. Jesus fasted for 40 days in the wilderness, and thus Lent, a time of sacrifice, is 40 days. In the Bible, 40 days symbolizes deprivation, meditation, transformation. … Continue reading
Dipping into the Champagne
We’re jumping ahead a few days with a look at this weekend’s racing; an evening school event on Thursday followed by a departure for opening weekend at Keeneland might mean that posting will be light as we head towards the … Continue reading
Weekend follow-ups
Some follow-ups from the weekend: An entirely accidental series of clicks led me to the following information about Pappy’s Double H. Pappy’s Double H was named in honor of Charles R. Wood by his daughter Charlene.Charlie Wood was co-founder with … Continue reading
Snapshots (literal and figurative) of Gold Cup day
Is it just me, or do the skies have an unerring tendency to open up just before a big stakes race? The first raindrops on Saturday fell with about 15 minutes to post before the Beldame. It rained off and … Continue reading
