Your excerpt from a report of the first edition of the Jerome got me to thinking -- Where does the term "hands down" come from?

It is so common in our language, but who knew it actually is a horse racing term from the 1800s, used to describe a jockey loosening the reins and dropping his hands once he sees no one will catch his horse, or so it says on the Internet.

Nice reporting and research. I was born and lived in the East Bronx for 13 years where all this history took place and it is nice to read the racing history of that area.
