New York Showcase Day!
How do I love thee, New York Showcase Day? Let me count the ways! Tomorrow at Belmont Park is all about New York, on and off the track. And having spent all but 10 years of my life here, I … Continue reading
Friday morning quick picks from Saratoga
Today brings the first of two twilight racing cards at the Spa this summer; post time is 2:30. Yesterday brought several promotions to the track: a short-sleeved T-shirt giveaway and a mid-summer St. Patrick’s Day. As I walked into the … Continue reading
Showcases and the Dash
New York Showcase Day at Belmont Park is as big a racing day for me as the Gold Cup, as the Travers, as the Wood. When the stakes schedule comes out, I mark my calendar: Showcase Day is a non-negotiable … Continue reading
Monday quick picks
It’s the last day of week four, Monday of Travers week, day 24. We won’t see Rachel Alexandra this weekend, but Jess Jackson’s decision insures that any final weekend doldrums will be swept aside by the appearance of his super-filly … Continue reading
A little meta in the morning
As I was writing yesterday’s post about a shortened racing season in New York, I found myself with plenty to say (shocker, that) but writing with a certain unease, unsure whether the presence of a rumor on a website and … Continue reading

It’s not surprising that as the holidays and end of year get closer, various charities are reminding us about donations. So if you’re looking for a way to help this holiday season, and get that 2008 tax deduction, I offer … Continue reading
Saturday at the Big A
Whenever I go to Aqueduct, I assume that it’s going to be cold. A pleasant surprise, then, that yesterday was sunny and warm, and most of us at the Big A were overdressed, especially when we stood in the sun. … Continue reading
Thursday morning quick picks
Random notes on some Brooklyn Backstretch favorites recently in action: Nacascolo, last seen being vanned off at Saratoga, was entered in a race at Delaware Park on September 14th; the race came off the turf, which is presumably why Nacascolo … Continue reading
Being Bullish
“Is Mr. Schwartz around?” I ask a stable hand, having no idea what the trainer looks like. He looks at me skeptically. “Not here right now,” he says. “Be back in a few minutes. In a pink cart.” A pink … Continue reading
Wednesday quick picks
I regret to inform Superterrific Stables of Green but Game that based on updated Take Ten! standings, I must unfortunately remove her blanket of roses as the winner of the Brooklyn Backstretch mini-league, and toss it over to Katie at … Continue reading
