A Hope For NBC’s Preakness Coverage
Let’s get this out of the way: Michelle Beadle blocked me on Kentucky Oaks day, after this exchange (you can click to enlarge): It seems a little mild to warrant being blocked, but Beadle can hardly be blamed for … Continue reading
Women and sports: swimsuit models and racing queens
This week, the Stronach Group, which owns Gulfstream Park in Florida, Santa Anita Park in California, and Pimlico Race Course in Maryland, announced the Ms. Racing Queen pageant, the lucky winner of which will “promote thoroughbred racing by representing the Stronach Group” at events like … Continue reading
What should we know, and when should we know it?
Earlier this week, the internet lit up with the news of the birth of Rachel Alexandra’s first foal, a colt by Curlin. Stonestreet Farm released a statement, photos, and video; good wishes, congratulations, and coverage exploded on news sites, blogs, … Continue reading
Changing racing’s Luck?

Churchill Does It Again–And Again!
Last summer at Saratoga, a turf writing veteran – male – called me over to a TV in the press box. “Have you seen this?” he asked. Seen what? He gestured to the television, rendered practically speechless by what he … Continue reading

Channeling YouTube
Not long after the Kentucky Derby, I was putting together a post about jockey John Velazquez, and, in search of embeddable video of the race, I went to YouTube, expecting to find an official version made available by NBC, by … Continue reading
Mixing Media; and what we’ll pay for
I have a little media fantasy. Several, actually, but this is the big one, the one in which I get to assemble, as if I were putting together a new laptop, my ideal of a cable system. I’d get to … Continue reading
Hockey, Horse Racing, and Versus
So I might just have a new favorite network. Yesterday afternoon, as I began to head south after a brief trip to Saratoga, Brother Backstretch sent along the following: The National Hockey League and the NBC Sports Group have reached … Continue reading
